Certified Translations

In most countries, any qualified translator may produce certified translations, provided they have previously taken the required examination (and, generally, an oath). In Hungary, the situation is not that simple. With the exception of documents related to corporate procedures, certified translations in Hungary fall under the monopoly of OFFI (Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation). Naturally, and contrary to any differing rumours, this law is only valid within the territory of Hungary. In abroad, translations made by OFFI are practically considered equal with those made by Reflex.

As for documents related to corporate procedures, the following government regulation is in effect: “Qualified translators and translator-proofreaders are also entitled to produce certified translations of extract from the company register, as well as data filed in the company register and corporate documents to any official language of the European Union, as selected by the company.” (Government Regulation 182/2009 (IX.10.) on the amendment of repeal of certain government regulations in relation with the entry into force of Act CXI of 2008 on the amendment of Act CXL of 2004 on the general rules of administrational authority procedures and services, as well as the transposition of the Directive 2006/123/EC on the internal market services.)

Regarding translations made from Hungarian to foreign languages, the translations produced by Reflex Translations are accepted everywhere in the world. We are only forced to reject an order if the foreign authority or other government agency requiring the translation also demands endorsement, called an apostille, in addition to the clause of the translation office.
In Hungary, documents are endorsed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who will only attach their apostille to translations made by OFFI.
